Products I regret buying # 1 - Benefit You Rebel

Hey guys :) you alright?

Today I'll share my story about a product I regret buying. I believe that positive reviews can help you find a product to suit your needs, but so can negative reviews! A lot of people don't like reviewing things they don't enjoy using but I think this could save people from spending money on products which might not be for them. Said product is Benefit's You Rebel, a tinted moisturiser. Now let me tell you, I'm not one to use tinted moisturisers anyway, but there are certainly ones I prefer to this.

I remember being offered a makeover by one of the Benebabes in Westfield London a couple of years ago and sat down to see what the fuss was about, I haven't been into makeup as much back then as I am now. Now, I'm really pale and hardly knew anything about foundation as I haven't used anything but pressed powder before. She began to apply You Rebel and we chatted away about how she only got the job the other day and didn't have any professional knowledge about makeup whatsoever, she just enjoyed doing it. Not very trustworthy I thought but  decided to just wait and see how it turns out. Huge. Mistake.

Eventually,  she was done and I had a quick glance in the mirror she gave me [bear in mind the lighting was pretty bad at that point]. It did look weird, not like me at all but I figured that's how makeup is supposed to look like. So I stepped out and went to the loos to have a proper look - I didn't want to bother her with critical looks in the mirror - only to discover I looked worse than a Geordie Shore cast member. My face had a weird orangey brown colour and to top it all off she applied bronzer literally everywhere. That's how I spent the rest of my day at Westfield.

Why did I purchase You Rebel in the first place you may ask. To be honest, I don't even know anymore. The girl kind of talked me into it whilst she was doing my makeup and already put it aside for me to purchase and I'm horrible at saying no. To anything really. I'm stupid shy and polite if I do say so myself.

Onto the product itself [Sorry about this mammoth story]! Apart from the colour being way too dark for my skintone, it feels quite slippery and oily on application. The smell is so off-putting, it smells so weird and medical if that makes sense. Even if it matched my skin tone, it goes patchy during the day. It does give an even colour for an hour or so I suppose but it doesn't give any coverage at all, then again that's not something I would expect from a tinted moisturiser anyway. And that's how three or four years later, I'm sitting here with a tube of this sitting in my drawer unloved. Don't get me wrong, I should have known better and the lady was lovely so it's not her fault at all.

Nonetheless I'm wondering, if anyone who owns this actually enjoys using it? Do you? I'd love to hear your opinion if you've tried it before!

  1. I bought this a few years ago and boy do I regret that! I completely agree with you, it's awful! I still have it stashed away somewhere barely touched so think I may just bin it .. It's so orange and goes ridiculously patchy like you said! Great review though doll, nice to see a breath of honesty sometimes :-) xxx

  3. I totally agree with everything. I bought this years ago and I am asian skin toned and it was too dark for me too and the smell seriously put me off. I didn't like it at all. Then a couple months ago I got my make up done at a Benefit counter and the girl was like you look amazing, I met one of my friends five minutes later and she asked why my face looked so orange!! xxx

    1. It's so so dark, isn't it! Ye the Benebabes always seem to say that but I've never been content with what they've done! Total waste of money xxx

  5. I bought this a few years ago because one of my friends loved it and I absolutely hated it. The smell, the texture, the way it sat and slipped on the skin, the way it oxidised and mainly, the way it broke my skin out, all meant it went straight in the bin - sadly this is a recurring theme for me with this brand with only a few exceptions. x

    1. I have to agree! Most of their products are a total let-down and not worth their price tag! x

    1. I think they do stock another lighter shade but given the consistency and smell I wouldn't give it a go though! There are actually only a few Benefit products I really like, the packaging is fantastic but the products are rubbish in the majority of cases. Thank you, glad I could help! :) xx

  9. Wow that's dark! Maybe all these years later it has oxidised? Either way, I found negative reviews just as important and helpful as positive ones :)

  10. i love honest reviews, totally agee with you that they help just as much as a positive review.
I tried this when i was on holiday about 3 years ago and couldnt get on with it either, its such a strange colour and just goes patchy. I really dont rate benefit products very highly at all, pretty packaging but i've always been dissapinted with their products (except porfessional).

If your looking for a nice tinted moisuriser, I'm using Laura mercier at the moment and its lovely. you should go into space nk and try it, the staff are lovely in there and wont pressure you into buying anything.

sorry for the long winded comment hun! x

    1. Aw don't worry, thanks for commenting lovely! :) Have to agree with you, their packaging is amazing but that's as far as it goes! Love the Porefessional though haha.

I shall check out the Laura Mercier one soon, heard a lot of great things about it! x

    1. Ooh you shouldn't try this one then! I would even go so far as to say it's my least favourite Benefit product. Then again I've been disappointed by loads of their products! xx

  12. I hate this product - even when they brought out you rebel
light it was too dark for me, they never bring out face make up pale enough for me yet every time I'm near a counter they insist on covering my face in the stuff and insisting its the right colour when it's blatantly not! I find Benefit to be the absolute worst as well in terms of pushy staff who line products up for you to buy without even asking you.

    1. Thanks for your comment hun! Yes, they are quite pushy indeed. And I'm yet to try one of their foundation products I really like, despite Erase Paste they're aweful! Used to be obsessed with Benefit but I've come to realise that was only due to their lovely packaging x

  16. Time & time again I have tried Benefit products hoping that it was just a one off bad product, but I am yet to be impressed by anything that I have bought from them! I love their packaging, but their price point is way to high. You can buy comparable things, or things that are even better, from a drug store for far less!
